About
Thought time travel was impossible? Think again: at this luxurious homestead, it might as well still be 1920. Named after one of South Africa’s foremost conservationists, Kirkman’s retains the old-world colonial aura of a century ago. Part of a private concession in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve – the Kruger National Park’s premier area for scenery and wildlife, and especially good for leopards – it idyllically overlooks the Sand River and boasts a rim-flow pool, exceptional guides and fabulous food.
Accommodation
Kirkman’s 18 stand-alone cottages each have private verandas offering fabulous bushveld views. Their bathrooms seduce with claw-foot baths (plus showers), while old-fashioned bedsteads and curious artefacts add to the bygone atmosphere. Discreet modern luxuries like wi-fi and air-conditioning ensure superb comfort.
Facilities
The original authentic homestead also contains an open-plan lounge, a library and homely bar areas where guests are encouraged to slump. Meals are served indoors, through French windows onto a shady veranda with more far-reaching vistas, or beside a campfire in the outdoor boma. The pool is surrounded by rolling lawns where warthogs graze, and spa treatments can be arranged.
Activities
Included in the board are early-morning and evening game drives in 4x4s, the latter featuring sundowner cocktails. Thrilling walking safaris led by experienced rangers and trackers are available, too, offering an insight into everything from the Big Five to incredible insects via interesting flora, animal alarm calls and spoor evaluation. Other adventures, such as tracking animals and photographic safaris, cost extra.
Child Policy
Children are welcome to come, with triple rooms possible for those under 16. If you book an exclusive-use vehicle, safaris can be tailored with kids in mind; otherwise the age limit for drives is 12, with those able 6-12 partaking at the manager’s discretion. Babysitting is available (surcharge).
The Best of South Africa Travel map displays the locations of the destinations and accommodation that we have selected and visited; for each item, hovering over or clicking the marker will display a short summary and photo of that place or hotel, and hotel pricing. Follow the links in the info box to the full page listing which has much more information.
Note that the online map offers both a satellite view (click satellite in the top right) and, for some locations, a street level view (Drag the person in the top left onto the map). These let you explore the country; and when you wish to explore in person, or if you have any questions about the places you see, give our staff a call, or request a quote. Our staff regularly visit the places and accommodation that we feature.
When you book a holiday with us we will provide full driving instructions for reaching your accommodation, where necessary; these can be used by yourself, or you could enjoy the luxury of a driver. Alternatively we will arrange private (car rather than coach) transfers for you; helicopter transfers are also possible for some destinations.
