Wild and dramatic, limitless, and breathtakingly beautiful;
Namibia boasts endless starry horizons, vast desert plains and shimmering wildlife reserves. This land of stark landscapes has some striking features like the Fish River Canyon - a dramatic chasm that snakes through the dusty Namibian landscape to the shifting sands of the world’s oldest desert, the Namib and soaring red desert dunes of Sossusvlei with 900-year-old fossilised Acacia trees rising from the white clay pan of Deadvlei. When it comes to wildlife, Etosha promises some epic game viewing with the added delight of the Etosha pan, a vast white salt pan which transforms into a lake attracting pink flamingos in their thousands. Namibia’s Skeleton Coast is a must-see for any traveller, this treacherous stretch of coast is bleak but stunningly beautiful, and a place where desert lions and elephants stalk the dunes among the shipwrecks and the skeletons of whales and seals that litter the shoreline. If its adventure you seek, Swakopmund is the country’s adventure capital, whether its skydiving over the Namib desert and the Atlantic Ocean or sandboarding down colossal sand dunes, there’s action-packed fun here for everyone.
Etosha National Park
Namibia’s malaria-free Etosha National Park is one of the largest national parks in Africa and home to the Big Five. Numerous man-made watering holes are dotted throughout attracting great herds of every animal in the park. The sights at these watering holes can only be described as mesmerizing and inspiring.
Swakopmund
Sandwiched between the massive red dunes of the Namib Desert and the roaring South Atlantic Ocean Swakopmund is a bustling coastal town with oodles of German colonial charm. Boasting pretty seaside promenades, sidewalk cafés, art nouveau buildings, and trendy bistros, it’s also famous for being Namibia’s adventure hub, having the largest seal colony throughout Africa and hosting its own Oktoberfest. The city’s location between the ocean and the desert gives adrenaline junkies a myriad ways to explore these spectacular landscapes. From sandboarding or quad biking on the rolling, colossal sand dunes to skydiving or hot air ballooning, visitors will truly experience the region’s unique beauty. Swakopmund is Namibia’s premier beach destination and is the gateway to the exploration of the Skeleton Coast and Namib Desert.
Skeleton Coast National Park
Stretching from Swakopmund all the way to Angola, Namibia’s Skeleton Coast is the world’s largest ship cemetery, often described as “the gates of hell.” As the cold and unpredictable Benguela Current of the Atlantic Ocean clashes with the dune and desert landscape of north-western Namibia, the thick fog, rough sea, unpredictable currents and stormy winds have caused many shipwrecks along this desolate coastline over the years. Huge numbers of stranded whales have lost their lives here and their skeletons are scattered across this region. Despite the hostile character of the Skeleton Coast, there are quite a number of wild animals to observe, for example desert-adapted elephants, rhinos, desert lions, brown hyenas, jackals, giraffes, seals, oryx, kudus and zebras.
Damaraland
The Spitzkoppe Mountains in Namibia’s Southern Damaraland are more than 700 million years old and are among Namibia’s most distinctive landmarks. These other-worldly mountains featured in the movie “2001: A Space Odyssey” and if you are keen on exploring surreal landscapes it’s the perfect spot to enjoy an incredible nature-based break. The Spitzkoppe Nature Reserve is a must-see when visiting this remarkable country. The reserve is home to a cluster of granite mountains that are more than 120 million years old and features visually stunning red bald granite peaks, rising straight from the desert floor.
Fish River Canyon
After The Grand Canyon in the USA, the world’s second-largest canyon is in Namibia. Fish River Canyon dates back more than 500 million years, which makes staring out into this prehistoric canyon an utterly awe-inspiring remarkable sight.
