Stellenbosch

About

Predominantly a university town, the oak tree-lined cobbled streets of Stellenbosch are home to thousands of students. However in between the future doctors and engineers you can find quaint bistros and a bustling café culture as well as buildings teeming with French Huguenot heritage and architecture.

Stellenbosch is also incredibly art-focused with a different piece of contemporary art found on every street corner en route to the many art galleries. Take an enlightened stroll along the town’s art route for glimpses into South African art life and enjoy a chat with some of the craftsmen vying for your attention to purchase their wiles.

This art extends to music as well – a deep entrenchment in Stellenbosch society. This village is the home of the oldest music school in South Africa. However, if it’s not the music from instruments you’ll hear, it’ll be the allure of the grapes from the areas’ many wine farms; calling you to taste their varietals – a pinnacle of South African Tourism.

Stellenbosch is the second-oldest wine-producing region in South Africa with its first vineyards planted in 1967. Over the decades, the town really has perfected the art of wine making and prides itself on over 200 wine producers. And with this many vineyards, one doesn’t have to look far to find breathtaking nature as valleys rise and fall around you and there is a blanket of green for as far as the eye can see.

Enjoy the splendiferous views from many of the world-class luxury hotels in Stellenbosch – the perfect place to enjoy a glass full of memories. The only interruption might be a falling leaf from the oak tree beside you.

Getting there

Stellenbosch is in the Cape winelands.  Accessible via the N2 and N1 and only a 40-minute drive from Cape Town city center and 30 minutes from Cape Town International Airport.

Best time to visit

The spring and summer months are the best time to visit Stellenbosch as the sun sets later, allowing you to enjoy a glass of wine before dinner at a side walk café at dusk.

Our staff regularly visit the places and accommodation that we feature.

When you book a holiday with us we will provide full driving instructions for reaching your accommodation, where necessary; these can be used by yourself, or you could enjoy the luxury of a driver.
