While many guesthouses in the affluent, beach-lined suburbs south of Cape Town are glassy and sharp-cornered, 21 Nettleton is castle-like and classical. It’s also hugely luxurious, down to the pool and spa, and unforgettably located: manicured lawns sweep down to a cliff, with Lion’s Head and the Atlantic Ocean frothing below. Inside are just five suites across eight floors, an indication of the level of privacy on offer. Owner Hugo lives on site, plus his three cats, adding a homely element to the refined service.
Accommodation
All five enormous suites blend opulent, old-school decor with underfloor heating and free wi-fi. None outstrip the Penthouse Suite, where 360-degree views, two bathrooms, indoor and outdoor dining facilities, a balcony, a fireplace, a lounge and a daybed all tempt you never to leave. For character, try the Steinway, which contains a grand piano. The King and Queen Suites have ocean views from terrace, while the smallest Lion’s Head Suite has inland mountain views but no outside space.
Facilities
This is a place designed for couples to relax. A beautifully shaded garden pool is accompanied by scattered chaise-longues, while nearby is a sauna and spa. Many more decks, patios and lounges await for hiding away or book-reading, while Hugo’s paintings and sculptures offer further distraction. He’ll happily give you a tour. Lunch and dinner are served daily using local ingredients, while the wine list features South Africa’s finest. Private tastings can be organised.
Activities
There are morning yoga sessions and occasional guided hikes – just ask staff for details. Ditto about Cape Town’s trendy restaurants, or how to get to Table Mountain (15 minutes), the main city centre (15 minutes) or Clifton and Camps Bay’s celebrated sandy beaches (10 minutes). Day trips to the Winelands or Chapman’s Peak are easily accomplished.
Child Policy
Children must be aged 14 and above, such is the hotel’s restful air.
