Description
Set next to a waterhole in the private Sabi Sand Game Reserve, this is one of Kruger National Park’s best-value lodges. Unlike some larger Kruger camps, Notten’s offers a charming, laid-back and exceptionally warm experience courtesy of Gilly and Bambi Notten, who behave more like long-lost pals than (third-generation) owners. It’s hugely romantic, too: in the absence of electric lights, candles and paraffin lamps evoke a magical, atmosphere feel each night.
Accommodation
Ranging in size, the eight spacious suites all come with charismatic African stylings and wooden decks looking onto the bush. Only the balconies of Rooms 3 and 4 face the camp’s waterhole. Suites also boast indoor and outdoor showers, mosquito-defying screens and insect-repellent coils. Beds are comfy and plug sockets allow for vital camera and phone-charging.
Facilities
Set atop a small wine cellar, Notten’s main thatched lodge features an open-plan lounge and wooden terrace facing the waterhole and plains beyond. Rhinos and elephants are common visitors. When possible, bush breakfasts and traditional dinners are served in an open-air boma, with a fire lit if it’s brisk. House wines and beers are included in the rates. Between safari excursions, a 20m lap pool ringed by sun-loungers and the spa’s indoor and outdoor treatment rooms vie for your downtime attention.
Activities
Morning and evening game drives around the Sabi Sabi in open-top 4x4s are offered daily as part of the board, led by experienced guides and hoping for Big Five spots. Also included each day are adventurous walking safaris: a chance to get more closely acquainted with the reserve’s smells, sounds and thrilling rhythms – and with that prolific wildlife.
Child Policy
Children aged six and over are welcome, with those 12 or under receiving 60% discounts. Family Rooms can be set up, or triple rooms used.

When you book a holiday with us we will provide full driving instructions for reaching your accommodation, where necessary; these can be used by yourself, or you could enjoy the luxury of a driver. Alternatively we will arrange private (car rather than coach) transfers for you; helicopter transfers are also possible for some destinations.
