About
South African safari lodges don’t come any better-looking. Sexily monochrome in theme, award-winning glass-fronted suites and plunge pools are scattered along the animal-heavy Sabie River, to which Ivory’s guests enjoy (along with those at Lion Sands’ three other camps) exclusive access. The setting is beautiful, the food fantastic, the service superb and the rangers world-renowned. Welcome to safari paradise.
Accommodation
They say suites, we say villas. However they’re categorised, the six ultra-luxurious units are achingly attractive and positioned for total privacy. Each is vast, each enjoys a private butler and each boasts an outdoor shower, courtyard, sofa-strewn lounge with fireplace, freestanding bathtub, glass-fronted bedroom, large viewing deck (where dinner can be taken) and a private, heated plunge pool.
Facilities
If you can somehow drag yourself away from your suite, the main house incorporates a decadent, art-lined sala and private bar, a small library and a bulging wine cellar. Outside, still more viewing decks gaze water-wards, while the River Island Deck floats on the Sabie. If it’s all too much, head to the Africology Spa and gym for some therapy. Dinners can be also served in an open-air boma.
Activities
That Sabie River access allows you closer to the Big Five than anywhere else in Africa during morning and sunset game drives. In between, embark on interpretative walks with vastly-experienced ecologists, rangers and trackers, or take a devoted hippo tour. Those are included in the board, along with astronomy lessons. Hot-air ballooning, and helicopter rides cost extra. Also additional are nights in one of the two Lion Sands ‘treehouses’: essentially open-air bedrooms, raised on stilts in the middle of the bush, and named the Kingston and Chalky Treehouses.
Child Policy
Children aged 10 and over are welcome, with tailored family programmes suited to teenagers – tracking animals via spoor identification, bush survival and treasure hunts.
The Best of South Africa Travel map displays the locations of the destinations and accommodation that we have selected and visited; for each item, hovering over or clicking the marker will display a short summary and photo of that place or hotel, and hotel pricing. Follow the links in the info box to the full page listing which has much more information.
Note that the online map offers both a satellite view (click satellite in the top right) and, for some locations, a street level view (Drag the person in the top left onto the map). These let you explore the country; and when you wish to explore in person, or if you have any questions about the places you see, give our staff a call, or request a quote. Our staff regularly visit the places and accommodation that we feature.
When you book a holiday with us we will provide full driving instructions for reaching your accommodation, where necessary; these can be used by yourself, or you could enjoy the luxury of a driver. Alternatively we will arrange private (car rather than coach) transfers for you; helicopter transfers are also possible for some destinations.
