Set high in the Drakensberg foothills is this family friendly hideaway which boasts country cooking, a large dose of friendly fun and a whole bagful of outdoor activities to enjoy.
Built in the 1940s and owned by the same family, The Cavern gets its name from the ‘Cannibal Cavern’ - a 200m wide overhang just above the hotel which was once home to ancestors of the Amazizi tribe.
For the past seventy odd years it has built up a strong following due to its friendly approach, breathtaking location and catalogue of activities nearby.
Accommodation
Nestled in lush woodland, each thatched room has a wonderful view of the surrounding scenery. Either Standard or Superior rooms and suites - situated away from the main lodge - are available. All rooms have en suite bathrooms and the superior rooms have a fireplace, private patio and balcony.
Activities
Quad biking and horse riding are popular past times whilst hikes are organised to the Tugela Gorge and to the top of the Amphitheatre for the more energetic. The Cavern is home to an extensive range of recreational facilities, from trout fishing to mountain bike trails. With a 9-hole golf course and Adventure Centre down the road, this is the perfect holiday destination in the Northern Drakensberg.
Facilities
A swimming pool, games room, playground and tennis court are available for all the family at the resort. Also there is a library and curio shop and even a bowling green. The Forest Retreat Health and Beauty Spa is set amid the fauna and each individual treatment is tailored to your personal needs.
The Cavern is home to numerous Bushman paintings and there are a staggering 213 species of birds and 73 species of tree surrounding the retreat. A must for nature lovers.
Child Policy
Children are welcome. Children under 7 are catered for in the children’s dining room.
Babysitting is also available.

When you book a holiday with us we will provide full driving instructions for reaching your accommodation, where necessary; these can be used by yourself, or you could enjoy the luxury of a driver. Alternatively we will arrange private (car rather than coach) transfers for you; helicopter transfers are also possible for some destinations.
Beautifully positioned between the forest and the sea, family friendly Thonga Beach Lodge is the place to be for an adventurous, relaxing but incredibly action packed holiday.
