About
Set attractively amid lakes, forests and hills near the ‘fly-fishing capital’ of Dullstroom, roughly halfway between Johannesburg and the Kruger National Park, Walkersons makes the perfect spot for anyone driving from city to safari. But this grand country lodge and large estate offers ample distraction in its own right courtesy of a spa, pool, walking trails and top-notch food.
Accommodation
Cosy and old-fashioned in style, the 25 suites come with private patios and fireplaces, plus dreamy views across the estate. Luxury Lakeside Suites are bigger and slightly more contemporary than Lakeside Suites, and offer outside showers. The two-bed Manor Suite suits families, while the large Honeymoon Suite promises romance via an extra-length four-poster bed and Jacuzzi bath. There are four self-catering cottages about 800m away, sleeping 4-10 with lounges, kitchens and covered verandas.
Facilities
Recalling a Scottish hunting lodge and dotted with heirlooms and classical paintings, the thatched manor house contains a formal dining room, a log-fire lounge and a bar. The high-quality dinners – roast duck with black-cherry sauce is the signature dish – and handpicked wines can also be scoffed outside on the terrace, near to the Amani Spa and its sauna and steam room. Also vying for attention are a gym, and an outdoor pool
Activities
Walkersons boasts 14 lakes and dams rich in rainbow trout. Guides can advise beginners or experienced anglers, and equipment can be rented (small cost). The estate also offers a network of walks – including to hilltop perches and a waterfall – as well as hiking trails into the Dullstroom Nature Reserve, where impala and zebra graze. Mountain-biking and horse-riding are available locally.
Child Policy
No children under 6 are permitted in Suites, but kids of all ages can stay in the cottages. Families with children aged under 12 are seated in the family dining room or on the terrace for meals. Babysitting is available.
The Best of South Africa Travel map displays the locations of the destinations and accommodation that we have selected and visited; for each item, hovering over or clicking the marker will display a short summary and photo of that place or hotel, and hotel pricing. Follow the links in the info box to the full page listing which has much more information.
Note that the online map offers both a satellite view (click satellite in the top right) and, for some locations, a street level view (Drag the person in the top left onto the map). These let you explore the country; and when you wish to explore in person, or if you have any questions about the places you see, give our staff a call, or request a quote. Our staff regularly visit the places and accommodation that we feature.
When you book a holiday with us we will provide full driving instructions for reaching your accommodation, where necessary; these can be used by yourself, or you could enjoy the luxury of a driver. Alternatively we will arrange private (car rather than coach) transfers for you; helicopter transfers are also possible for some destinations.
