About
Exclusivity is the word. Though it’s South Africa’s largest private game reserve, Tswalu Kalahari only accepts 30 guests between its two lodges. One of them is this intimate retreat, which accommodates just two parties at once – meaning that every group has its own dedicated vehicle, guide and tracker. Tarkuni also comes with a team of butlers and five-star facilities, making it especially ideal for large families or groups of friends.
Accommodation
Decorated in classic African bush-style, the five sumptuous suites sleep up to ten guests. Each comes with its own butler, magnificent bathroom and outdoor shower. Through sliding French windows, lounges lead onto sun-soaked decks, including a terrace and outdoor skybed.
Facilities
While the Kalahari scenery deservedly takes centre stage, Tarkuni’s opulence and attention to detail aren’t far behind. Whether you’re wallowing in the sparkling pool, game-watching on the giant veranda, snoozing on fireside sofas, admiring the wine cellar, indulging in award-winning spa treatments, sipping sundowners on lantern-lit dunes or dining in a hillside lookout, expect to feel truly at peace. There’s a landing strip for those arriving by air.
Activities
Safaris are tailored to your group’s wishes. Prefer to see the local meerkat colonies? No problem. Desperate for cheetah? Easy. Rather look for rare desert black rhino? Sure thing. Game drives, horseback rides and educational bush walks to are available, and you probably won’t see another group all day. For a truly unique experience, sleep out on The Malori, an isolated deck with king-size bed. You’ll drift off to exotic animal sounds and wake to breakfast.
Child Policy
Children are extremely welcome in this malaria-free paradise. Special touches include a kid’s food menu, stable visits, rolling down sand dunes and cooking dinner in the special children’s boma, while the Junior Ranger programme includes archery and tracking lessons from local Bushmen. Complimentary babysitting is also on offer.
The Best of South Africa Travel map displays the locations of the destinations and accommodation that we have selected and visited; for each item, hovering over or clicking the marker will display a short summary and photo of that place or hotel, and hotel pricing. Follow the links in the info box to the full page listing which has much more information.
Note that the online map offers both a satellite view (click satellite in the top right) and, for some locations, a street level view (Drag the person in the top left onto the map). These let you explore the country; and when you wish to explore in person, or if you have any questions about the places you see, give our staff a call, or request a quote. Our staff regularly visit the places and accommodation that we feature.
When you book a holiday with us we will provide full driving instructions for reaching your accommodation, where necessary; these can be used by yourself, or you could enjoy the luxury of a driver. Alternatively we will arrange private (car rather than coach) transfers for you; helicopter transfers are also possible for some destinations.
