Rhino Post Safari Lodge

Game Lodge, Kruger

Description

Overlooking the intermittent Mutlumuvi River, where animals gather to glug any available water, Rhino Post is a small and sophisticated safari stop. Found just south of the main Kruger National Park, its surrounding concession is amply big enough that you’re likelier to see lion than humans during game drives. A smart-looking retake on colonial style, the lodge has been built to have minimal impact on its environment: hence the low-energy lighting, numerous woods, raised walkways and absence of concrete.

Accommodation

Eight tented suites raised on stilts, each with a deck precisely positioned for wildlife-watching. Ditto the outside shower; there’s also a freestanding bathtub if you prefer indoor soaping, plus his-and-hers sinks. Otherwise suites are open-plan, their comfy lounge areas and netted beds positioned under thatched roofs and quietly-billowing canvas walls. Ceiling fans keep things cool and a solar-powered generator provides smartphone or camera juice.

Facilities

In between game drives, most guests drape themselves somewhere around the main lodge. Its plunge pool, wood-framed deck, bar and sofa-heavy lounge – warmed by a fireplace in evenings – all overlook a busy Mutlumuvi waterhole. There’s an extensive wine ‘cellar’, too, one which is mined for delectable dinners served in a special tree-ringed area. Candlelit meals for two beside the Mutlumuvi are also possible, as are various in-suite massages.

Activities

Using open-topped 4x4s, game drives depart at dawn and then late-afternoon, following delicious high teas and concluding with drinks during the remarkable African sunset. You’ll be very unlucky not to see all the Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo – along with zebra, giraffe and a host of bird species. Night drives are possible, while sister property Rhino Post Plains Camp focuses on walking safaris. Guests often spend two nights there.

Child Policy

All ages are welcome, although no-one under the age of 6 can go on game drives.

The Best of South Africa Travel map displays the locations of the destinations and accommodation that we have selected and visited; for each item, hovering over or clicking the marker will display a short summary and photo of that place or hotel, and hotel pricing. Follow the links in the info box to the full page listing which has much more information.

Note that the online map offers both a satellite view (click satellite in the top right) and, for some locations, a street level view (Drag the person in the top left onto the map). These let you explore the country; and when you wish to explore in person, or if you have any questions about the places you see, give our staff a call, or request a quote. Our staff regularly visit the places and accommodation that we feature.

When you book a holiday with us we will provide full driving instructions for reaching your accommodation, where necessary; these can be used by yourself, or you could enjoy the luxury of a driver. Alternatively we will arrange private (car rather than coach) transfers for you; helicopter transfers are also possible for some destinations.
