About
Memorably carved into rocky mountainside opposite Leopard Rock, this luxury lodge is more like a castle or eyrie than safari house. Yet the sweeping game reserve below, of which sensational views are available, supports the Big Five, with expert guides available to help you see them. Stylishly designed with stone, adobe walls and ochre wooden roofs, andBeyond Rock Lodge also has just six suites, meaning an intimate, exclusive feel.
Accommodation
Truly dramatic, those air-conditioned suites seem to cling to the steep cliffs. Each is amply spacious with a fluid, open-plan feel – a small indoor lounge leads to a bedroom with glorious open views of the bushveld, and then onto a spacious bathroom with sunken tub. Through wooden shutters and doors awaits a private viewing deck, and a plunge pool looking (eek!) right over the precipice. Wave to passing genets, or admire the incredible sunsets, or spot game on the plains. Four suites also factor in outdoor showers for added al-fresco amazement.
Facilities
In the main area, meals – richly inventive fare from the across Africa – is served under hand-wrought chandeliers in the evocative dining room, on the main game-viewing deck or far down below, in a spectacular bush clearing under starlit skies. Alternatively, have dinner brought to your suite and eat in complete privacy.
Activities
Following coffee and biscuits, early morning game safaris are likely to bring Big Five encounters, and many a cheetah. Afternoon tea, evening safaris and their sundowners are also complimentary, along with birdwatching, educative ranger walks, canoeing and river cruises, while other activities – thrilling flights to nearby Maputaland beaches, night-time turtle drives (November to January), deep sea fishing, in-room massages – cost extra.
Child Policy
Only children over age 11 are accepted at the lodge due to its mountain topography.
