Description
The Peech truly is a peach. Located in the city’s leafy Melrose suburb, its steel gates and lush gardens help keep Johannesburg’s particular brand of brouhaha safely at bay. Owned by a Yorkshireman, James Peech, it’s an appealingly boutique and handsome hotel, with a pool and much seclusion on hand to recharge you before or after a flight. Sandton station and its airport shuttles are just a five-minute taxi away.
Accommodation
Situated in the main colonial building or – offering extra privacy – out in the gardens in two annexes, The Peech’s 16 spacious bedrooms combine modern amenities with real Afro-ethnic chic: tribal wall hangings, ebony dressing tables, antelope-skin rugs and and glossy photo-books. Garden rooms and luxury suites overlook the lush greenery and afford private patios or balconies, while those atop the homestead contain original wooden flooring. All have wi-fi, air-conditioning, bathtubs and blue mosaic-tiled bathrooms.
Facilities
Hosting regular art exhibitions, the lobby lounge leads through to a cocktail bar – boasting South Africa’s biggest range of Veuve Cliquot – and then onto the acclaimed Bistro Restaurant. During lunch and dinner, the latter’s unfussy French fare can be served out on the patio, which overlooks a small outdoor pool and its daybeds. The mature garden sweeps away beyond, dotted with swing seats. Grab a book from the library, and book an in-room massage while you’re at it.
Activities
Guests may use the 24-hour gym next door for approximately £5 per session. Further afield, Johannesburg’s stylish Maboneng district is easily visitable, or you can go shopping on Diagonal Street or experience jol (South Africa’s equivalent of craic) in Braamfontein’s trendy bars.
Child Policy
Children aged over 6 are welcome. Extra beds aren’t available, but two suites in the main house share a landing and work well as a pair. Babysitting can be arranged.
The Best of South Africa Travel map displays the locations of the destinations and accommodation that we have selected and visited; for each item, hovering over or clicking the marker will display a short summary and photo of that place or hotel, and hotel pricing. Follow the links in the info box to the full page listing which has much more information.
Note that the online map offers both a satellite view (click satellite in the top right) and, for some locations, a street level view (Drag the person in the top left onto the map). These let you explore the country; and when you wish to explore in person, or if you have any questions about the places you see, give our staff a call, or request a quote. Our staff regularly visit the places and accommodation that we feature.
When you book a holiday with us we will provide full driving instructions for reaching your accommodation, where necessary; these can be used by yourself, or you could enjoy the luxury of a driver. Alternatively we will arrange private (car rather than coach) transfers for you; helicopter transfers are also possible for some destinations.
