About
Leave the hordes to Kruger, and head to this off-the-beaten-track treasure in northern Zululand (aka KwaZulu Natal). Pakamisa has lots going for it: as a private reserve without any dangerous predators, it unusually allows adults and children alike a chance to walk about the bush, and really immerse themselves into bush life. Other perks include a collection of magnificent Arabian Horses, the exclusivity of a maximum 16 guests, superb food and sublime views.
Accommodation
Individually themed after animals, the eight luxury Safari Suites are set apart in landscaped gardens. They’re also substantially-sized, containing handsome bathrooms and sunken lounges which lead onto a spacious veranda. From there are soaring views of the seasonal Pongola River. Best of all is the Honeymoon Suite, thanks to a king-size bed and especially large deck. Every suite is techno-free, devoid of TVs or wi-fi, but there is internet access in the Main House.
Facilities
Full of eclectic African antiques, Spanish architecture and high ceilings, the lodge caters for both quiet relaxation or pre-dinner socialising in the Hunter’s Bar. An extensive library also tempts, but the headline act is the formal El Prado restaurant, whose four-course dinners have racked up awards. Venison’s a specialty, cooked in cahoots with homegrown fruit and vegetables, as are wines. Outside is a pool with a spacous deck and sunbeds.
Activities
On guided game drives, available any time, you might see giraffe, zebra, warthog and a multitude of monkeys. Ditto on bush walks around the large reserve, where you’ll also learn about the fascinating insects and plants, from dung beetles to toothbrush trees. Birding excursions are possible too, and thrilling horseback safaris using those elegant stallions.
Child Policy
Children of all ages are welcome, with babysitting available (surcharge). Those aged under 13 must share their parents’ room. Two beds can be added to each suite. Horse-riding for children under 10 can be organised by prior arrangement.
The Best of South Africa Travel map displays the locations of the destinations and accommodation that we have selected and visited; for each item, hovering over or clicking the marker will display a short summary and photo of that place or hotel, and hotel pricing. Follow the links in the info box to the full page listing which has much more information.
Note that the online map offers both a satellite view (click satellite in the top right) and, for some locations, a street level view (Drag the person in the top left onto the map). These let you explore the country; and when you wish to explore in person, or if you have any questions about the places you see, give our staff a call, or request a quote. Our staff regularly visit the places and accommodation that we feature.
When you book a holiday with us we will provide full driving instructions for reaching your accommodation, where necessary; these can be used by yourself, or you could enjoy the luxury of a driver. Alternatively we will arrange private (car rather than coach) transfers for you; helicopter transfers are also possible for some destinations.
