About
Scattered around a glade of milkwood trees beside wild Hermanus Lagoon, this six-suite bolthole blends real privacy with luxury and fine dining. Lagoon Lodge is actually part of the vast Mosaic Private Sanctuary, but secluded two miles from its main property. Just two hours east of Cape Town, the Overberg ranks among the world’s best places for whale-watching. Surrounded by fragrant fynbos, your board includes many activities, along with all meals.
Accommodation
Safari-style and built from local stone and thatch, the six stand-alone suites each have king-size beds under romantic netting, lounges, writing desks, fireplaces and ceiling fans. In the bathrooms await large tubs, copper sinks and a private outdoor shower. French windows lead out to private decks facing either the lagoon, the Overberg Mountains or fynbos. One larger chalet, the Family Suite, sleeps two adults and two children.
Facilities
Accessedvia raised boardwalks, the communal lapa is where meals – from breakfasts with freshly-baked muffins to excellent three-course dinners using homegrown vegetables and locally-sourced meats – are taken. Guests can also order picnics, or dine at the nearby Mosaic Lagoon Café courtesy of a free shuttle. Back at base, there’s also a fire-heated lounge and another heated plunge pool positioned for the wondrous sunsets and star-cluttered night skies.
Activities
The estate extends to Walker Bay’s beach, and jaunts there are included in your rent, along with wine-tasting, nature walks, guided kayak trips past flamingos and blue cranes, and 4x4 drives around the three-mile lagoon. For an additional cost you can embark on a fynbos quad-biking tour, take a pontoon cruise, rent bikes, visit a spa, go cage-diving among great white sharks (June-October) or book onto some boat-based whale-watching (June-October).
Child Policy
Children of all ages are welcome, with cots and babysitting (at a surcharge) available. The Lagoon Lodge Family Suite is the best bet.
The Best of South Africa Travel map displays the locations of the destinations and accommodation that we have selected and visited; for each item, hovering over or clicking the marker will display a short summary and photo of that place or hotel, and hotel pricing. Follow the links in the info box to the full page listing which has much more information.
Note that the online map offers both a satellite view (click satellite in the top right) and, for some locations, a street level view (Drag the person in the top left onto the map). These let you explore the country; and when you wish to explore in person, or if you have any questions about the places you see, give our staff a call, or request a quote. Our staff regularly visit the places and accommodation that we feature.
When you book a holiday with us we will provide full driving instructions for reaching your accommodation, where necessary; these can be used by yourself, or you could enjoy the luxury of a driver. Alternatively we will arrange private (car rather than coach) transfers for you; helicopter transfers are also possible for some destinations.
