About
Delightful Franschhoek village and its surrounding, vine-filled valley once provided a retreat for fleeing French Huguenots; three centuries later, sumptuous The Last Word does the same for lucky new visitors. Found at the end of Franschhoek's main street and accessed beneath leafy canopy, it’s a five-star boutique promising intimacy, immaculate service, utter tranquillity and a tasteful dose of contemporary Provençal style – light woods, creams, pale greens and blues.
Accommodation
The ten rooms are lovely and luxurious. Eight Superior Doubles boast a small shaded garden and patios or balconies facing the mountains, while two Pool Suites share their own swimming square and afford a private courtyard and lounge area. All have underfloor heating and fresh flowers, along a real sense of opulence through classic furnishings and spacious ensuite bathrooms.
Facilities
The handsome garden grounds contain a small, beckoning, heated pool – decorated with pretty mosaics by local artists – while a tree-lined courtyard and comfy lounge provide further escapes. Glasses of local wine are complimentary. Up above is a sleepy roof terrace with more spectacular mountain views, with many guests choosing to enjoy sundowners as days drift to a close. Outstanding breakfasts are tailored to individual preferences, typical of a fantastic staff who make you feel truly special.
Activities
Those same staff can also make reservations at one of the 50-odd restaurants in Franschhoek, which has truly become the Cape Winelands’ foodie hub. Each guest at The Last Word also enjoys a personalised travel guide service for tours and itinerary-planning – some time in Cape Town, perhaps? Or tastings or cellar tours along local wine routes? Personal chauffeurs are possible, active pursuits – hiking, fly-fishing, golfing on championship courses – can be set up, and spa treatments arranged.
Child Policy
Children over 3 are welcome.
The Best of South Africa Travel map displays the locations of the destinations and accommodation that we have selected and visited; for each item, hovering over or clicking the marker will display a short summary and photo of that place or hotel, and hotel pricing. Follow the links in the info box to the full page listing which has much more information.
Note that the online map offers both a satellite view (click satellite in the top right) and, for some locations, a street level view (Drag the person in the top left onto the map). These let you explore the country; and when you wish to explore in person, or if you have any questions about the places you see, give our staff a call, or request a quote. Our staff regularly visit the places and accommodation that we feature.
When you book a holiday with us we will provide full driving instructions for reaching your accommodation, where necessary; these can be used by yourself, or you could enjoy the luxury of a driver. Alternatively we will arrange private (car rather than coach) transfers for you; helicopter transfers are also possible for some destinations.
